Data security? Protecting data so as not to be “caught off guard” in the cloud

Every entrepreneur strives to offer their customers better services at a lower cost. Information technologies, especially those of Cloud Computing, provide innovative solutions for managing many activities efficiently and with potential savings. But they also present critical issues and privacy risks that should be taken into account.

The data to be protected online is growing at an alarming rate, to the point where it can no longer be managed. That is why it needs to be stored and encrypted so that no hacker can access it.

Gartner has identified a number of technologies to counter cyberattacks:

  1. Cloud Access Security Brokers (Casb): software that helps control the security of access to SaaS applications and of data sharing with Cloud services and mobile devices. They offer visibility, management and protection for any user, anywhere and on any device. Moving to Cloud applications without a Casb acting as an intermediary is not advisable.
  2. Then there is Endpoint Detection and Response (Edr), where the endpoints could be PCs and smartphones. All companies looking for automation in security should include these real-time protection systems on the Network. A smart, automated system detects threats faster and solves the problem immediately. There is a widespread view that targeted attacks are bypassing traditional signature-based security controls for malware prevention and remain undetected inside the system for a long time. The threat is real: we could all be compromised without knowing it. As a result, alternative techniques are emerging, such as signatureless intrusion detection, to block never-before-seen attacks.
  3. User and Entity Behavioral Analytics (Ueba) perform security analysis and wide-ranging monitoring, reducing the volume of alerts and assigning the correct priority to those that remain. In practice, it identifies known threats by defining a baseline of normal behaviour in order to detect anomalies. Once attackers have entered company systems, they can move from one virtual machine to another. To deal with this, company networks are micro-segmented. In the event of an attack, it isolates the threat so that the entire company network is not compromised.
  4. DevSecOps: operating models that use scripts and templates to configure security infrastructures, including application testing.
  5. Intelligence-Driven Security Operations Center Orchestration Solutions: a “smart” centre that goes beyond basic monitoring with process automation and orchestration, and manages security alarms. Here the action is twofold: both the threat and whoever is behind it are monitored.
  6. Remote browser. Most attacks start with malware spread via email or URL. By creating a browser server on premises or in the Cloud, browsing is isolated from the rest of the company network and the malware stays out.
  7. Deception techniques, that is, “trickery”: by designing virtual “honeypots”, hackers are lured in.
  8. Finally, Pervasive Trust Services: services designed to support billions of IoT devices.
