July 2016 quarterly results: here are the figures for the web giants. Good news for Amazon, Alphabet and Apple.

In July it is time to “do the accounts” for the web giants too. Microsoft closes its fiscal year on 30 June and publishes the figures for the fourth quarter of 2016. Cloud results (Azure) were above expectations, while the hardware division is suffering from the collapse of mobile. Windows 10 licences are increasing: +27% for Home and 2% for Pro. Revenue rose by 1.8% compared with the same period in 2015, while profit for the last quarter was 5.5 billion dollars. A superb period for Amazon, which is enjoying the fruits of growth in both e-commerce and the Cloud. Revenue for the last quarter was 30.4 billion dollars, up 30% on 2015. Good results for Amazon Web Services, with revenue of 2.89 billion dollars, up 60% on a year ago. Net profit, to the surprise of all analysts, was 857 million, almost ten times higher than a year ago. Very good results for Google Alphabet too, the holding company that controls Big G. Revenue rose to 21.5 billion, while profits were 5.9 billion. Despite the collapse in iPhone sales, Apple held up on the whole: the Cupertino company’s revenue during the last quarter was 42.4 billion and its profit 7.8 billion. A lacklustre result compared with the same period last year, but a recovery is expected in the coming months thanks to the new products being launched.
