Forget the image of Microsoft as you have known it for the last 41 years. The era of a core business tied to hardware and software is over.
The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, in a long interview given to the American agency Bloomberg, explained his corporate vision, identifying the Cloud and mobility as the two focuses for future investment.
“The Cloud”, Satya Nadella explained, “is the future. Our business models are evolving”.
It is important to understand that this does not mean Microsoft will no longer produce Windows or Office. Of course, that could also happen, but Nadella is talking about something more complex: a change of perspective, not of products.
“It is essential to understand the trends under way in the market in order to be able to change and evolve”.
Azure, Microsoft’s professional Cloud platform, has grown considerably, to the point of taking the lion’s share in the last fiscal quarter. This is a fact the company has to take into account. Nadella’s idea, in fact, is to offer an “ecosystem” of services synchronised with one another, in a much broader sense than we understand it today. Microsoft has indeed begun developing apps capable of bringing its Cloud-Based services, or services otherwise enhanced by interaction with the Cloud, to competitor platforms as well.
