RED HAT and AWS announce ROSA, the new OPENSHIFT service available on the AWS platform

ROSA is the new OpenShift service available on Amazon Web Services, a new managed service available through the AWS console that makes it easier for Red Hat OpenShift customers to build, scale and manage containerised applications on AWS.

Thanks to ROSA, customers will be able to enjoy simplified Kubernetes cluster creation using the Red Hat OpenShift console, its features and its tools, without having to scale and manage the underlying infrastructure manually. ROSA simplifies moving on-premises OpenShift workloads to AWS and offers tighter integration with other AWS services.

Using the new service requires no upfront investment, and customers will pay only for the container clusters and nodes they use. In addition, ROSA will allow users to access Red Hat OpenShift with billing and support managed directly through AWS.

Currently, AWS offers the broadest range of container technology in the cloud, including Amazon Elastic Containers Service (ECS) for customers who want deeper integration with AWS services, and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) for customers who prioritise running Kubernetes.

AWS has always guaranteed its users elasticity, security and scalability, while Red Hat OpenShift ensures autonomous cluster management. The partnership between AWS and Red Hat OpenShift was created precisely to meet users’ different needs. ROSA is managed by AWS for Red Hat OpenShift and works seamlessly with other AWS services at scale; it also integrates support and billing into the AWS user experience.

Let’s look in detail at the benefits and features of the new service:

  • A native AWS service accessible on demand from the AWS Management Console, supported by AWS and Red Hat and billed through AWS.
  • Create fully managed Red Hat OpenShift clusters in minutes with self-service deployment, so you can be up and running straight away.
  • Seamlessly integrated with AWS services. Take advantage of more than 170 AWS compute, database, analytics, machine learning, networking, mobile and other cloud-native services.
  • Jointly managed and supported by Red Hat and AWS, with an integrated support experience and an SLA with 99.95% uptime. Customers will also receive a single invoice from AWS for their OpenShift and AWS consumption.
  • Addresses comprehensive security and compliance needs with industry-specific standards and regulations such as SOC-2, ISO-27001, PCI
  • Allows clusters to be deployed across multiple availability zones in supported regions to maximise availability.
  • Cluster node scaling. With ROSA you can easily add or remove compute nodes to meet resource demand.
  • Choose from memory-optimised, compute-optimised or general-purpose EC2 instance types, with clusters sized to meet your needs.
  • Available globally. Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS is available for purchase in all countries where AWS is commercially available.
  • ROSA offers the production-ready OpenShift that many companies already use on-premise today, making it simpler to move workloads to the AWS public cloud as business needs change.
  • Build high-quality applications faster with OpenShift self-service provisioning, automatic security enforcement and consistent deployment. Accelerate change iterations with automated development pipelines, templates and performance monitoring.

“Increasingly, companies are turning to containers to improve the speed and portability of their applications, and are relying on technologies such as Red Hat OpenShift and AWS that make it easier to deploy containerised applications. ROSA gives these customers the ability to run containers seamlessly on AWS using the familiar Red Hat OpenShift tools and APIs, and integrates the full range of AWS services to build, scale and manage their workloads”.

Bob Wise, GM Kubernetes, AWS

“Red Hat OpenShift provides a common, open, enterprise-grade Kubernetes platform capable of spanning the entire hybrid infrastructure, from a customer’s physical data centre to its operations on AWS. ROSA provides a simplified process for organisations that want to extend the power of Red Hat OpenShift on AWS without having to manage separate technology streams, allowing IT teams to focus on delivering value rather than on managing the underlying infrastructure.”

Sathish Balakrishnan, vice president, Hosted Platforms, Red Hat
