Red Hat has announced the arrival of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for 64-bit ARM platforms (ARM64/AArch64). After two intense years of development, the company has announced that version 7.4 of its operating system is now compatible with servers equipped with ARM processors.
The support comes shortly after the unveiling of the new Qualcomm Centriq 2400 processors, but it is not limited to that platform alone. Red Hat has in fact also announced support for the HP Enterprise Apollo 70 server, which uses a Cavium ThunderX2 Server Processor.
Red Hat’s goal is to create a single platform that can operate regardless of processor architecture, and the past two years have been spent building an environment capable of running while maintaining application compatibility.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 for ARM now uses the Linux 4.11 kernel, which has been specifically modified to support the hardware platforms of Red Hat partners such as HPE, Cavium and Qualcomm.
Together with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 for ARM, the company also announced the availability of Red Hat Software Collections 3 and Red Hat Developer Toolset 7.
