Red Hat Summit 2021: behind the scenes of the success of UPS, Lockheed Martin and FORD

Red Hat Summit 2021: behind the scenes of the success of UPS, Lockheed Martin and FORD

Red Hat is the world leader in providing Open source solutions for businesses. With an approach based on the concept of Community, it distributes technologies such as Kubernetes, Containers and Linux capable of delivering high performance.

Among its products, Red Hat offers the Red Hat Openshift service, a Container platform that provides automated operations across the entire batch, to manage Hybrid Cloud, Multi Cloud and Edge deployments.

The platform aims to foster digital transformation, optimise and increase developer productivity and promote innovation by improving the use of the Infrastructure in place.

What are the real Benefits of Red Hat Openshift?

  • Thanks to its support, developers can work to a standard shared by the whole team, minimising configuration errors and restoring functions in the event of errors.

A perfect example is UPS, a leading company in the logistics sector: to gain greater visibility of its data and improve planning, it worked with Red Hat to build a flexible, agile, Container-based Cloud Computing environment.

By adopting a collaborative DevOps approach, UPS developers are now able to efficiently create new features for logistics and workforce organisation, while ensuring a better tracking and delivery experience for end customers.

Having established that Containers were the technology best suited to the company’s needs in terms of agile, Cloud-based workflows, UPS assessed several solutions, finally choosing to build the new application environment with Red Hat’s enterprise Open source technology.

  • What makes Red Hat’s service even more indispensable is the level of security and the regulatory requirements needed for Role- and Policy-based access control.

As Lockheed Martin, a major company operating in the aerospace and security sector, knows well.

To get ahead of the competition, Lockheed Martin needed to update its development process using an agile methodology and DevSecOps practices.

The company needed to transform its organisation and its way of working.

The F-22 Raptor scrum team managed to improve its ability to forecast future sprints by 40% and, just 1 year after the project began, Lockheed Martin was able to deliver new communication capabilities 3 years ahead of schedule. “Thanks to the partnership with Red Hat, the company expects to be able to develop a capability, make it operational the following day and deploy it to the fighter jet in a way similar to how updates are received on mobile devices”, explains Cawood (VICE PRESIDENT, F-16/F-22 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, LOCKHEED MARTIN).

  • Red hat Openshift supports many programming languages, including Web Frameworks, Databases and connectors to external and mobile back-ends.

As Ford Motor company discovered when, to speed up and simplify maintenance, it decided to use a containerised Cloud platform such as Red Hat Openshift. Thanks to the new platform, Ford recorded an increase in the productivity of its Containers-as-a-Service support.

Their challenge was to Innovate for faster delivery.

However, collaboration among hundreds of thousands of employees and across thousands of internal applications and sites gave rise to difficulties that Ford’s conventional IT environments and development approaches could not overcome.

A new environment was needed that would allow a more efficient use of resources.

Ford aimed to support its data centres with Containers, application programming interfaces (APIs) and automation solutions.

Openshift is available in two consumption models:

  • Openshift Container Platform, used by business customers to manage and deploy Openshift in their own Data Centre;
  • Openshift Online, Cloud-based and used by individual Developers.

The product offered by Red Hat is used by many enterprise companies, among which we can mention IBM and AWS.

IBM, for example, has benefited from it by combining this product with its own Cloud to automate updates, scalability and provisioning.

The Openshift service on IBM Cloud has been named a leader in The Forrester Wave: Multi Cloud Container Development Platforms.

The service uses enterprise-grade security and scaling and also relies on resilience to handle unexpected surges.

In addition to IBM, AWS also believes in Red Hat’s service, launching a new service known as Rosa.

Red Hat Summit 2021

Red Hat® Summit 2021 will take place on 27 and 28 April, an event that is expanding more and more to adapt to the open source journey thanks to a completely new and flexible approach.

Designed to be more accessible than ever, these events will provide a mix of innovation, collaboration and learning opportunities.

As always, all the new solutions will be presented, such as ROSA, unveiled just a few weeks ago.
